World Breastfeeding Week 2019
Let's Empower Ourselves - Make Breastfeeding Possible!
The title of our post is the new slogan for this year's 2019 World Breastfeeding Week, and aims to serve as a platform to demand equitable social norms regarding gender, such as teamwork between mothers and their partners for successful breastfeeding, as well as balancing paid and unpaid work.

Once again, it seems essential to remind governments, employers, and society in general that breastfeeding is not just a women's issue, but with the support of fathers, family, and friends, breastfeeding rates increase. That is why we must continue to fight for gender equality solutions and to improve breastfeeding rates.
This year, WHO along with UNICEF are working towards the approval of paid maternity leave and paternity leave to promote shared responsibility in caring for children.
The AEP (Spanish Association of Pediatrics) ensures that breastfeeding promotes better health for both mothers and children, and that it could save more than 800,000 lives a year. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of mothers developing breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart diseases.
It is the WHO that recommends exclusive breastfeeding from the first hour of birth up to 6 months of age. Complementary foods should then be added while continuing to breastfeed up to 2 years or more.
At Olmitos Group, with a workforce composed of 70% women, we support these initiatives that promote gender equality, fair sharing of responsibility with children, and encourage childbirth.
