Babies should sleep on their back to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Recent studies have established a relationship between sleeping posture and the phenomenon of sudden infant death. This posture, recommended by pediatricians some years ago, has saved the lives of many children.
Previously, it was common to lay the baby on their stomach, as it was believed that this position helped to expel gas better and prevent suffocation if the baby vomited. However, it was later proven that this position was more dangerous for sleeping infants.
It is believed that some babies who sleep on their stomachs may have a higher tendency to experience obstruction and inhale their own carbon dioxide again because they are less likely to wake up to change their head position.
Should all babies sleep on their backs?
A healthy baby should sleep on their back. In the case of certain illnesses, it is recommended to lay the infant on their stomach.
There are some disadvantages to having the baby lying on their back for extended periods. Keeping the baby in this position for a long time can lead to plagiocephaly or flat head syndrome, a deformation of the skull caused by constant pressure on the same area of the head.
To prevent plagiocephaly, constant changes in position are necessary. In more severe cases, the use of a corrective helmet may be recommended to redirect the baby's head growth.
Therefore, it is advisable to change the baby's position, alternating the head turn. Throughout the day, while the baby is awake, it is recommended to change their position, hold them in your arms, and place them on their stomach.
Placing the baby on their stomach while awake has benefits
Lying on their tummy on the mattress, in addition to preventing head deformation, is beneficial for the baby's development. It will help them achieve good spinal extension and acquire the necessary muscle tone to hold their head, roll over, or crawl.
From a sensory perspective, this position provides the baby with a new perspective of the world around them.
How to create a safe sleep environment?
- The infant should sleep on a firm mattress.
- The bed should be stable, with a single-piece base. The height of the bed should not be less than 60 centimeters.
- The bed should not be filled with rattles, toys, or other objects that could harm the child.
- The baby's room temperature should not be too high. Additionally, it is essential not to overdress the baby, avoiding excessive clothing.
- The baby's environment should be clean.
