The most common food intolerances among children
Children also suffer from food intolerances. Parents must be attentive to these alterations in their children's diet because, although they are not as conspicuous as allergies in their manifestations, they cause a series of symptoms that affect the quality of life of the little ones. Intolerance to certain foods appears once babies stop breastfeeding and start eating other foods.
Symptoms of intolerance
The symptoms can be very general, so they may initially be overlooked. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, gas, and skin rashes like atopic skin should alert that something is wrong in children's digestion and it is advisable to see a doctor. Especially when these problems occur frequently.
Additionally, in some children, these digestive problems lead to delays in growth, weight, and height, which is a clear warning sign for pediatricians.
What are the most common intolerances in children?
Once the indicated symptoms appear, it is very likely that the child has some type of intolerance. Undoubtedly, the most common and the first ones to be paid attention to are the following:
Lactose intolerance: Lactose is the sugar found in milk. Approximately one third of the Spanish population has a deficiency in lactase levels that causes this type of condition. In most cases, the cause is genetic, so it can be lifelong.
Most children with this intolerance experience digestive problems about half an hour after consuming the food. The most positive aspect is that once the problem is diagnosed, it is easy to replace it with the wide variety of alternatives available in the current market: soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, or simply lactose-free milk will help to continue consuming this food without the discomfort it causes in intolerant individuals.
Gluten intolerance: Gluten is found in commonly consumed cereals such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. This intolerance can damage the intestines due to the strain and may even lead to some form of anemia. Although celiac disease is supposed to affect only one out of every 100 Spaniards, more and more supermarkets and restaurants are offering a selection of gluten-free foods.
There are other common intolerances to certain foods like eggs, which many children may overcome over time once they fully develop the mucous tissue surrounding the stomach.
