Baby talk or how to talk to a baby
Have you noticed how you and your environment speak to the baby? The way adults address a baby is completely different from how we talk to other adults. We use a special intonation, include diminutives, and our voice tone is usually higher... This way of speaking to a baby is known as baby talk.
What is baby talk?
Well, baby talk is precisely the change that adults make in our language when addressing a baby, or the characteristic way that adults have of speaking to a baby. This communication is based on:
- Speaking slowly with more pauses and longer ones
- Using a high-pitched voice tone
- Care in pronunciation
- Greater expressiveness
- Using short and simple phrases
- Repeating the phrase
- Using diminutives
- Greater use of gestures

According to experts, in this way, we get the baby to pay more attention, try to imitate us, and thus start in language. Also, in this way, we improve and control the baby's understanding of the messages.
But to stimulate the baby's language development, in addition to using baby talk correctly, we must use other strategies that reinforce language such as: getting down to the child's level, establishing eye contact to talk to him, using games that stimulate oral language and listening, reciting children's songs, or using positive reinforcement.
Of course, we must bear in mind that language is a skill that is acquired gradually and the way we speak to the baby is an important factor for the baby to start imitating it.
Speaking to the baby from pregnancy is not only very positive but also recommended by experts, as this way we stimulate the baby's speech and listening, as well as provide them with vocabulary and language skills.
